Christmas gift baskets are a way of life in my family. You see, when I was a kid, we didn't have a lot of money. But we did have, a lot of relatives. So, we needed to send out many Christmas gifts each year. Finding appropriate Christmas gifts on a limited budget can be difficult. Couldn't buy all the cousins action figures like they wanted. Couldn't buy aunt Betty the new blouse that you wanted to get her. The one thing we could creatively put together on a tight budget was Christmas gift baskets.
One good thing you could say about my family, was that we always did the best with what we had. You see, every Christmas gift basket we made was like a work of art. The key was to include small samples of gourmet food. My grandmother likes to make jams, and this was always the centerpiece of every Christmas gift basket. We would also put in pieces of cheese from my father's dairy, and some fancy sausage if we could afford it. And, don't forget candies for the kids. They were carefully wrapped in Christmas paper and tinsel, just for the holidays.
Christmas gift baskets are not only about what's inside, but what is outside, as well. We would do a sensational job wrapping up all the items. What we did not have in cash, we made up for in creativity. We would use ribbons, bows, tinsel and any other festive stuff we could find around the house. We would also make our own Christmas cards and include them with the baskets. We never got a complaint with our Christmas gift baskets.
Actually, more often than not, we received compliments on them. I think people really love getting personal, handmade gifts. I guess it's okay to get something useful and practical and even nice to get something indulgent or whimsical, but getting a gift that someone you care about spent a lot of time and thought into creating is incredible. It's a loving gesture and they will know you put effort and care into it.
The first attempt at creating a gift basket may not come out just the way you want, but persevere, it takes time to perfect. Christmas gift baskets -- or any other handmade gifts -- are certainly worth it. You will save some dough, and give a gift that will be cherished.
