Mailing western Christmas cards to your friends and family this year will add a singular style to your holiday greetings. I reckon that most folks don't consider western Christmas cards when thinking 'bout greeting cards; yep, not a thought, I'm sure. You, however, should be giving it a lot of thought, especially if you live in the southwest.
First of all, do you really want to send out precisely the same ol', tired, greeting cards as everyone else? Second, wouldn't you prefer to be different? Once I decided to give desert south-western Christmas cards, as opposed to snow, sleighs and Santa, I began to get positive comments…yee-haw!
Just in case you've never before seen a western Christmas card, I suppose I should describe exactly what it is. The most obvious thing that makes western Christmas cards different is the overall theme—the imagery. Instead of sending a message of sleigh rides or snowballs, western Christmas cards send greetings from cowboys, clear skies and cacti.
There is, in fact, a myriad of southwestern motifs from which to choose; such as lassoed borders, barn siding, and aged rodeo-poster backgrounds. They might boast something a bit unique and offbeat; a theme that most folks would not associate with Christmas, but which otherwise makes sense. For example, here's one I saw with a cowboy-hat-wearing Santa, barbecuing on a wood burning grill: "Rib racks roasting on an open fire, grilling aromas nipping at your nose." Now that's a Texan Christmas!
The one stand-out idea behind western Christmas cards is the uniquely American Christmas theme portrayal. With old-fashioned Christmas cards, there is this entirely European tilt to the holiday; all the old world gingerbread and candy cane Christmas of Northern Europeans, complete with snow covered trees.
By sending or receiving western Christmas cards, you get to see the wild spirit of the American west…celebrating Christmas. Go ahead, make my holiday!
